Study of the Optimal Grid Resolution and Effect of Wave–Wave Interaction during Simulation of Extreme Waves Induced by Three Ensuing Typhoons

Three typhoons, Meranti, Malakas, and Megi, occurred successively in eastern Taiwanese waters September 2016, causing extreme waves (significant wave height > 10.0 m), these events were selected to investigate the effect of model grid resolution wave–wave interaction on simulating typhoon-driven waves. The WAVEWATCH III (WW3) model, with 0.50 deg, 0.25 0.20 0.10 0.05 deg resolutions, two reanalysis wind fields adopted simulate ocean during three typhoons. results indicated that exertion Climate Forecast System version 2 (CFSv2) winds over WW3 yielded optimum simulations typhoon a compromise between accuracy elapsed time. In present study, modeled nonlinear interactions using discrete approximation (DIA). numerical experiments revealed underestimations significant when excluded interactions, especially employing higher resolution. This study also found is superior Wind Wave Model (WWM-III) CFSv2 because WWM-III tended overestimate all Taiwan 2016.
